Fun With Play-Dough

Dolly

I still feel like fussing over hurricane Dolly. The name is a diminutive of “Dorothy”, which means ‘gift of God’. I don’t know that the people in Dolly’s path are in agreement with that, and I would like to make the case for a name change by suggesting some alternatives and their meanings.

  • Dera, or Daere, of Welsh origin; meaning: “Fiend”
  • The Hungarian Dasco, meaning: “God Judges” (although that one might leave the door open for idiotic evangelical pastors who decide the people that get hit by the hurricane did something bad to deserve this, and we’ve heard enough of that)
  • Damiane, French, or the Latin Damone: “Untamed”
  • Daeva is Indian for “Evil Spirit”
  • Dakini, also Indian, meaning “Demon”

And my personal favorite: the Biblical Damascus…it means “Sack full of Blood”.

Speaking of Sacks full of blood, when Katherine Gunther, 36, of Lebanon, Indiana attempted to perform a Wiccan ceremony she accidentally stabbed her foot with a 3-ft sword. According to the Associated Press, she was performing a good luck ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery; due to a recent run of good luck she needed it to say thank you. Apparently, this ceremony involved lighting candles, burning incense, and driving a sword into the ground during the full moon. Except, she missed; I guess that good luck ran out just then. Let’s hope for a swift recovery, we need colorful people like that.
