What do we know about Pope Benedict, besides that he’s creepy looking and wears funny hats? Rome’s most famous citizen has certainly worked hard to put himself on the map; unfortunately for him, this mostly involves making people angry. A lot of people.
Just a handful of examples:
On January 23 of this year, the church of Ireland had to officially release a statement, distancing itself from the comments made by an aide to Minister Nigel Dodds. The aide in question, Mr. Wallace Thompson, called the Pope ‘The Anti Christ’.
In September of 2007, the Pope pissed off some Palestinians so much that they set fire to five churches in the West Bank and Gaza.
In spite of recent efforts to come together, the Pope still hasn’t really forgiven the Anglicans for seceding.
In May of 2007, the Pope told Latin American bishops in Brazil that American Indians had been ‘silently longing’ to become Christians 500 years ago. This did not go over well.
In July of 2007, the Pope declared that Protestant churches are mere ‘ecclesial communities’, and their clergy phonies without the right to give communion. Evangelicals the world over were choking on their grape juice.
The question is now, who is the Pope going to anger while he’s here? Not Bush; he didn’t do much more than look at the well-dressed father adoringly. And he’s not even Catholic.
